Privacy Policy
Last updated · June 11, 2026
The short version. D—Type runs on your Mac with your own AI key. Your text goes straight from your Mac to the AI provider you chose — never to us. We don’t have an account system, we don’t store your writing, and there’s no D—Type server in the middle to leak. The only thing that ever leaves your device is the API call you trigger, and (if you opt in) anonymous crash reports with no text in them.
This policy explains what D—Type (“we,” “us”) does and doesn’t collect when you use the D—Type macOS app and the detype.app website. We wrote it in plain language on purpose.
1. What the app collects
Almost nothing, by design. D—Type has no user accounts and no D—Type-operated backend that receives your content. Specifically:
- Your API key is stored in the macOS Keychain on your device. It’s used only to authenticate your requests to your chosen provider. We never receive it or transmit it to ourselves.
- The text you transform (what you select and run through ⌥Space) is sent directly from your Mac to the AI provider you selected — Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI — over an encrypted connection. It does not pass through any server we control. We never see it, log it, or store it.
- Your voice profile (writing samples and the style preferences D—Type derives from them) is stored locally on your device only. You can delete it at any time.
- Your preferences (hotkey, model choice, toggles) are stored locally in standard macOS app settings.
2. Your AI provider handles your text
Because D—Type uses your own key, the AI provider you pick processes your text under their terms and privacy policy, not ours. Please review them:
- Anthropic (Claude) Privacy Policy — note that API usage is generally not used to train their models.
- OpenAI Privacy Policy — API data is generally not used for training by default.
You are billed directly by that provider for your usage. We are not party to that transaction.
3. Crash & error reporting (optional)
To fix bugs, the app can send anonymous crash and error reports via Sentry. These contain technical diagnostics (a stack trace, app version, macOS version) and are configured to exclude personal data — they never include the text you’re editing or your API key. This is off unless enabled, and can be disabled in settings.
4. The website
detype.app is a static marketing site hosted on Vercel. We may use privacy-respecting, cookieless analytics to count visits and understand which pages are useful. We do not run advertising trackers that build a profile of you across the web. If we add a checkout, payments are handled by a third-party payment processor (e.g. Lemon Squeezy or Paddle) under their privacy terms; we receive only the order details needed to deliver your license.
5. What we never do
- We don’t sell or rent your data. There’s essentially nothing to sell.
- We don’t store your writing or build a profile of you.
- We don’t require an account to use the app.
6. Your rights
Because your content and profile live on your device, you’re in control: delete the app’s data or the app itself to remove everything locally. For any website-side data (e.g. an email you gave us, or a purchase record), email us and we’ll access, correct, or delete it. Depending on where you live, you may have rights under the GDPR or CCPA; we honor them.
7. Children
D—Type isn’t directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent age in your region) and we don’t knowingly collect their data.
8. Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date above and, for material changes, note it on the site.
